Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI)
By Robert Safuto on Nov 15, 2007 in Analysis
An effort by a number of Northeast U.S. states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Who Is Involved?
Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont are currently active participants in the RGGI effort.
Why Does It Matter?
This is the most significant cooperative effort to date in the U.S. with respect to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The ultimate goal of the effort is the development of a multi-state cap and trade program for carbon emissions.
The Outlook
Momentum is definitely building with respect to these types of cooperative efforts in the U.S. Several Midwest U.S. states have just announced a similar initiative. And with carbon emissions continuing to be a high profile issue at the national and international levels there is plenty of impetus to keep RGGI moving forward.
